I never really had to try this method myself. We have been so blessed with an awesome sleeper. Sure there have been periods that he woke up at midnight and stayed up till 3 but I think that's a normal part of babyhood.
Jack slept in our room in a pack 'n' play for the first three month of his life. It was really more for me then for him. I wanted my baby near me. I wanted to be able to get up and grab him and feed him and put him back down without waking up too much. I wanted to be able to watch him sleep. I had this friend that had me so unnecessarily scared of SIDS that I could let him nap in a different room when he was first born. That ended as soon as I realized that I had no clean clothes and hadn't showered in days because I was afraid to do anything while he slept. When he was around two months it got to the point where Hub or the dogs or I would wake him up at night. His sleep patterns got worse instead of better. None of us were getting any sleep.
So Hub suggested that we put him in his crib, all the way in the next room. It took me about a week before I gave in and put my baby in his very nice crib in the next room. I sat in the living room watching him on the baby monitor till at least midnight. An amazing thing happened. He slept. He slept until 3 am that night. So I got 3 hours of uninterrupted sleep that night. It was heaven. Before long Jack slept for longer and longer periods of time.
We basically give him a bottle and a little snuggle time then he goes in his crib awake but sleepy, and he falls asleep on his own.
Because Jack learned to fall asleep by him self we get adult time and sleep.
